Computer vision Meets Animal Welfare: Tracking Pig Posture and Movement in Dynamic Lighting

Written by Jeffrey Lewis | Apr 13, 2025 1:16:12 PM

A collaborative study between Signify and Wageningen University & Research and was published recently in the journal Translational Animal Science. This study outlines their newly-developed computer vision tools to help understand swine behavior in their housing environments. Prior to this study, computer vision tools lacked robustness, often failing to successfully detect swine position if the lighting environments changed.

Aaron Stephan, ONCE by Signify’s Director of Research and Innovation commented , “This study is an important advancement because it enables better lighting programs to be developed for swine, allowing us to change the lighting environment and understand the effects on the animals”.
